Chapter 4: Tracks in White Ash

Past the ridge, the ash lay white and unbroken, which was wrong. Everything in the wilds left tracks.

Tan circled the plain three times before it would set a paw down. In the center they found a single line of footprints that started from nothing and walked toward the ruin.

The prints were human. They were also, the license manual would have insisted, at least four hundred years old.
