Under the full moon the ranking stone rewrote itself, and the whole academy gathered to watch names rise and fall.

Lin Mo stood at the back with his hood up. His name was not on the stone. His name was under it, in the list only he could read.

By moonset he understood the rule that governed the hidden list: it did not rank strength. It ranked debts, and someone at the top already owed him.
